Maritime Safety and Pollution:

 

This video was amazing. The voice was a girl that sounded younger. She was very concerned with this problem. It goes along a set PowerPoint type project with many of pictures that go with what she is saying. It expains what it is and why it is bad. Then, it goes to say that the ultimate solution is to stop pollution, which I agree with completely. I definitely think that pollution is a big issue and am doing an informative presentation about it for my communications class. The fact that so many people just outright break the law is ridiculous and more actions need to be done against it.

The page was worth visiting because it was mostly facts and had very little opinion in it other than humor. The site offers many informative, substantial, and insightful facts. I didn't know any of this information before reading this webpage. The spelling as well as grammar is very well thought out and good. If there were any mistakes, it was beyond my knowing.

This website holds a lot of value due to the use of facts. Everything is well thought out and well put together. He uses very important things such as graphs and meetings that have to due with what he is talking about to prove his point.

My topic is being addressed throughout the entire blog posting. It goes into detail about everything and shows examples. It is also very scholarly by being from a college professor as well as the language used. The major arguement  being made is that as everyone thinks that Obama has caused jobs to decrease with the implimation of EPA regulations, but in reality jobs have gone up and the unemployment rate in WV is lower than the national average. Instead of losing jobs, they are being placed in different positions. Coal productions are still very high.

It was written in July of 2012. To me, that is soon enough not to need updated quite yet. If anything has changed, it probably has only changed slightly; therefore, the information is still valid. If something significant has happened since then, I'm sure I would/could find something new about it.

His point of view going in was a kind of curiosity due to lack of information. Towards the end of the article you can clearly tell that jobs have not decreased in the coal industry due to his findings. He doesn't think that there is a war on coal. He is a professor and researcher. He wants to get the information out, so he feels better and gains from posting this. Not only does he help himself, but he informs others. He isn't really biased because he gives both points of view but then again he concentrates on how McKinley is wrong and mean. The message is on the school website. He links and states where he gets the information from. He got his own data with the help of a few other green groks. He is not one-sided. He goes into detail about everything. He uses negative words for the opposing view though, but not neccesarily positive ones in his case.

It causes debates and uprises because it doesn't apply to everyone.

Positive because it enhaces the learning process.

I find it most interesting how the whole presentation format changes. You can see how she not only grows in her computer work but how she grows as a person. You see the changes in her life through a PowerPoint, and that to me is just... cool.

while typed works appear immediately, there is often a considerable wait time between keying in instructions and a response from computer, the length of wait time is unpredictable and maybe several minutes, and the result is often unexpected

You are able to have off task discussions while waiting for response from computer.

1. Why are networks better than hierarchies?

Hierarchies lack flexibility and are slow with external changes, people are more information transmitters than independent agents, and people at the top end up swamped with high rates of change. Networks make it more level and easier to control.
 

2. What is a nation state and how is it being threatened?

a physical territory with a political system, environmental system, and economic system..
 

3. How is civil society gaining legitimacy over government agencies? Give an example of a NGO (Non-Government Agency) whose goals and services you think are beneficial to solving a global problem.

Civil society has become a powerful force. They have grown more complex and knowledgable. People trust them more. UNICEF fights hunger. I think it is a good organization.

Their solutions are helpful. With their breakthroughs, desalination, new vaccines and drugs, safer everything, etc. they become helpful.

a dangerous gap(: -- political backlash, autarchy, adn authoritarian forms of control that can destroy liveral values and human freedoms
 

6. What Global Issue concerns you the most? Why?
I don't know a whole lot about any of the other global stresses besides environmental stesses. So therefore it concerns me the most. For my last two years of high school, I realized the impact we have been having on the environment and simple ways that we can help stop or better the environment. But does anyone, including myself on occasions, do them? No. People don't care or take into consideration what they are doing to it. Nor do they know. When the day comes that their house just caves in, we run out of fresh water, or precious food... Then people will be concerned. But by then, its too late.

Chapter #3: Students, the Net Generation, and Digital Natives

1. What is the fundamental problem with the discourses around children's use of technology?

They fail to reflect the diversity and complexity in real life.

2. What is meant by the term "moral panic"? Link to an image, online article, cartoon, or some other resource that depicts the "moral panic" associated with young people's use of digital technologies.

It is used to describe conditions in which a group in society is supposed to be a threat to social values and norms.
In this article, it says how young people are the target of moral panic.
 

3. How do you feel about engaging in more "collaborative learning" during your education at Fairmont State?

I think it would be fun in certain cases, but then again I'm not a huge fan of group work. I usually either end up taking on all of the work or stressing out over someone else doing it. Then, there's the case like in my lit. class where nobody in my group read the story but me, yet knew more about it by spark noting it. So, groups can be a good thing too. I just wouldn't work "collaboratively" as my first choice.

4. Do you think Universities should move to a more free-market based privatization business model? Why?

I don't think they should completely, but a little might be good for the future of them.
 

5. According to the author what is wrong with Prenskey's revised position on his definition of "digital native"? Do you agree with this authors criticism of Prenskey's view of the role technology plays in the education of young people?

He leaves out that digital enhancement must be accepted to succeed. First, this is not a flat world. It has definitely been proven that it is round, and saying that it is flat kind of offends me. I don't think that schools lag behind. I just think that they haven't found a way to use technology in education yet. I'm sure they will though as they are trying by using smart boards and skype in the classroom.
 

6. What are the characteristics of Millennial? Are you a Millennial?

civic generation, heroic, collegial, and rationalisitic with core values such as community, technology, and affluence-- I wouldn't say I'm heroic, or have a core value of community, technology, or affluence.
 

7. Do you think there is such a thing as the "Net Generation"? Why? Why not?

Yes because society is being a more technology based society and has for the past lifespan of some humans or 80 years.
 

8. What is meant by the term "networked individualism"?

moving away from place-to-place interaction to person-to-person in character.
 

9. How would you feel about Fairmont State discontinuing the use of Blackboard and Webmail to using Gmail and Google tools?

Even though it gives me problems sometimes, I like Blackboard. It keeps me on track. Webmail could easily go and I'd be happy with my gmail account.
 

10. Why does the term "Digital Native" persist despite lack of empirical evidence of age related difference due to rapid increase of digital technologies?

Because it still exists even though it doesn't follow a specific pattern or plan.

The children because they can sell it to the adults.

High Noon 20 Global Problems 20 Years to Solve Them - Chapters 5 & 6

1. Why is inflation less of a concern in the new world economy?
Price increases don't usually stick due to hypercompetitive businesses; therefore, inflation has decreased over the years.

2.What is the difference between a negative feedback economy and a positive feedback economy?

negative feedback economy- farmers produce more while consumers buy less/lower level of demand
positive feedback economy- higher level of demand

3. Give a example of how new technologies can provide developing countries with an opportunity to catch-up with modern economies?
New technologies can bring money and jobs into the country by making disproportionate benefits close to non-existent. Look at China with their smart cards.

4. What is one prediction the author made concerning the new economy that appears to be true?
the stresses? I don't really know the answer to this. 

5. Why is excessive trust in free-market economies promoted by free-market fundamentalists a cause for concern?
As the book says, the market is a moron. There will be emerging social problems and overflowing carrying capacity.

Skype Session

In my opinion, the assignment with skype was pretty cool. I have never used skype, or any other computer related chat that you can see another person with, so it was a whole new experience for me. It definitely is a good way to communicate with people that are far away, or even someone fairly close. We may have had difficulties with it, but in the end it worked out. I would like to experience more and become familiar with it.

Read Chapter 2: Digital Wisdom and Homo Sapiens Digital

1. What was the term "Digital Native" meant to be used as?

It was supposed to be a metaphor for describing the differences between younger and older people regarding digital technology.

2. According to author what are the characteristics associated with Digital Natives?

They grew up with technology so that makes them more comfortable with it then that of their parents or older generations. They also are good at finding shortcuts when others cannot because they have grown up with it.They don't know everything, they are just more comfortable with it.

3. Do you consider yourself a Digital Native?

Yes.

4. What is Digital Wisdom?

--both wisdom arising from the use of digital technology to access cognitive power beyond our innate capacity and to wisodm in the prudent use of technology to enhance our capabilities.

5. How does the author define "wisdom"?

He gives examples of wisdom seekers and digital wisdom to say that it is a lot of unknowns put together in the brain and comprehending what is happening. Also, the Oxford English Dictionary sentence about judgement and capacity of judging rightly in matters relating to life and conduct. In all reality, he gives examples of many definitions.

6. How can technology enhance our Wisdom? Give three examples from the chapter?

-it can give access to tools that help us with judgement and decisions
-helps with cognition and in turn, helps with memory with complex things
-more communication opportunities with less emotional ties

-enhances access to data
-enhances ability to conduct deeper analyses
-enhances ability to plan and prioritize
depending on what section you go from.

7. What concerns did Socrates have about the technology of writing?

It undermines the memory.

8. How can teachers practices Digital Wisdom?

We can encourage participation as well as involve our students with availible technology. We also need to recognize that children need to be taught wisdom and not just cleverness.

9. The author states that he is "...opposed to those who claim the unenhanced mind and unaided thinking are somehow superior to the enhanced mind." Are you? Why or why not?
This chapter basically shows you that they are not superior because our world is coming to a complete digital age. People need to know at least the basics of technology. I don't believe that enhanced minds are superior either though because I believe that in certain ways certain people are better at certain things; therefore, no one person can be superior in all aspects of life.

Quote: As I listened to all these critics, nice and not-so-nice (and as my own views evolved), it seemed clearer clearer to me that being a digital Native is not at its core, about capabilites, or even knowledge, regarding all things digital.

Response: I feel like the in the world we live in today, there is no such thing as being nice anymore. Everyone is always using "constructive critisism" about even a person's outfit. It's no longer, lets focus on the good in this, but rather what did they do wrong, or a he said she said, they are a terrible person ordeal. I don't understand why everyone has to take things out of context or put other things together to try and see the bad in everything. I know that that is not the point of this sentence, but that really stuck out to me. He means good and he tries to point out all the things he may be wrong about or can be taken in a misleading way.. so why is everyone being so harsh? He very blunty says multiple times that he means no offense and that not everyone applies to this because not everyone lives the same life or has the same experiences.

As he states, nobody is born being a digital native. They grow up to be by being comfortable with technology.

Obama is there to discuss what has happened with people that were actually there. Obama is happy about what they have to say. They are working out the best solution.

Could they not come up with a different caption than the title of the article? Obama looks happy, so is he seizing the claim or did the workers just tell him what they were going to do about it? He doesn't look like he is the one talking; he looks like he is listening to what they have to say and is happy about it.

He is trying to figure out a solution by concentrating, thinking, and then he will discuss it after he has given it a few moments of hard thought. The books show that he may be using other rescorces to figure it out, but they're blurred because they are not the main focus. The trees are there to make it look more like a calm place.

Why is the Iran Hostage crisis being compared to the BP oil spill? How is Obama going to respond? Is this crisis going to hurt Obama that bad?

Read Chapters 1-4 p. 3 - 23 and answer the following questions:

1. Choose one of the unprecedented stresses on the earth resources and describe how it will negatively effect the quality of life of people living in developing countries and people living in modernized countries. Demographic explosion- it puts a stress on urbanization, food, energy, diseases,pollution, and poverty in both developing and modernized countries.

2. What is the major debate around the future of market-based economies? how to balance the basic market oriented approach wit this or that regulation or policy

3. How has this technological revolution different the previous technological revolutions and what two factors of production and now more important than capital, labor and raw materials? this one has to do with transformation of time, not transforming energy or matrials-- knowledge and creativity

4. What new service ideas have you had direct experience with? Drawing on your personal experience what are the benefits and drawbacks of these new service ideas? products are becoming more like services- because I have bought 4 cars now (I don't see any problems with it unless someone can't pay and yet they still get the things they want), giving things away- because I LOVE goodwill as well as let my friends go through my clothes on a regular basis (I think its very generous with no drawbacks, the world is in need of less competition), and bundling and unbundling- because I heard the whole overview whenever I was trying to buy internet and they wanted me to get cable and dvr and everything else and its brother ( it drives me crazy because I know what I want and don't need anything else)

Response: Even though I love my debit card, I still rather enjoy going to the bank. Debit/credit cards may be faster, but there should be some pride taken in actual cash. It goes way back and destroying that value, could send a lot more going down the drain. I, personally, would rather have a check to take to the bank to either cash or deposit than a direct deposit. I think it is easier to keep track of and helps you be more responsible. As does carrying around actual cash. With credit cards, its just one swipe and you don't pay attention to all the money you're spending until you get that bill. It is causing debt and I think that if we could, we should go back to having to pay cash for everything or just use debit because the card won't work if you don't have enough money in the bank. This sentence got me very heated for these reasons.

Quote: Learning to look without drawing inferences is a powerful observational tool that can gather rich visual data for the observer.

 

Response: I chose this because I think it not only applies to media, but people in general. If you learn not to judge things just by the visual aspect, you might learn a lot more than you would if you did judge. In media, there are specific reasons why things are the way they are. Why the camera is angled the way it is shows power and gives it a certain feeling. The colors in the picture depict certain things. Everything has a place and a specific reason so that a specific feeling is evoked. If we don't concentrate on that, then we can see other things and see why or what they're trying to do to/with us.

1.What is semiotics? The study of signs and symbols used in communication.

2. How can teachers capitalize on students preferred literacy behaviors? Teachers can use their student's behaviors to help the students be more literate with technology. It can help them ask important questions and engage in discussions.

3. According to this article why is it important for students to learn to analyze the news media? It is important to test what they say. The media might be holding something back or inserting something in to get a reaction from you. It may not always be completely true. You need to follow these "lens" to make sure what you're looking at is good.

--using a real-world problem solving investigation, create and interpret data using various methods of displaying circle graphs, histograms, and frequency curves, make predictions, include information concerning outliers, present and justify results.

I chose this quote because, in my opinion, this quote is the truest statement I've read. It is true that the Internet has brought us great growth, but along with growth comes problems. There are always things that one must protect themselves from. In this case it is cybercrime, bullying, information overload, etc. The internet has defiantly come a long way and I believe it can only advance. It is true, however, that there are still a lot of barriers is has to overcome. Whether it is a college student writing a paper or a soccer mom trying to find something for dinner, the Internet will always be put to use.

1. In my opinion I would be a tecknoloevangelist because I am willing to try out and use new technologies.
2. It is so problematic because some people believe that others should have a research led approuch the technology rather than assuming that just becuase they grew up around it they can use it.
